Investment readiness

An investment readiness checklist for early-stage and small-scale rounds

Most readiness checklists are written for later-stage, large institutional rounds. This one isn't. It's built for founders raising angel, seed, or a first outside check, where the bar is different and the diligence is faster, but real.

Five areas, and what "ready" actually looks like in each one at this stage:

Financial model. Doesn't need to be complex. Needs to survive a five-minute stress test: clear assumptions, a real hiring plan behind the cost side, and unit economics that hold together.

Documents. A cap table that's actually current. IP assignment for every founder. A burn rate and runway summary. Not a fully built data room, but the core pieces ready to produce quickly when asked.

Pitch and story. A narrative that works said out loud, not just on slides. A market size with visible math behind it.

Technical readiness. A non-technical person can repeat the product back after hearing the pitch once. Known technical risks are named, not hidden.

Investor Q&A. The hardest questions have been said out loud, to someone who pushes back, before the real meeting.

The honest version of this checklist isn't "have every box checked." It's "have a clear, true answer ready for every box," even when the answer is "not yet, and here's the plan." Pre-seed companies without historical financials aren't failing this checklist. Founders with no answer at all are.
